There is A New Search Engine in Town Called Cuil

It’s about time someone took a grassroots run at Google.  I was just having this conversation last week when I was in California about how people who work for large corporations see better ways to do things and then go out and do them by themselves.

It seems even the cool Google can’t keep that small, entrepreneurial feel rolling.

Cuil is a perfect example of this.  Cuil is a new search engine started by  husband and wife Tom Costello and Anna Patterson who are ex-Google search experts.

Recently they raised $30 million in start up dough.

Bam.

Nice job.

How much better than Google?

Cuil claims to have 121,617,892,998 web pages indexed, more than any other search engine, which is pretty damn impressive considering they’re only been around for less than 24 hours as of this writing.

The related category function is very cool (cuil?) and reminds me much of related posts in blogs.

I hope they grow their biz and will be supporting it in many day to day searches.

Cuil says about it’s services:

“Cuil searches more pages on the Web than anyone else—three times as many as Google and ten times as many as Microsoft.

Rather than rely on superficial popularity metrics, Cuil searches for and ranks pages based on their content and relevance. When we find a page with your keywords, we stay on that page and analyze the rest of its content, its concepts, their inter-relationships and the page’s coherency.

Then we offer you helpful choices and suggestions until you find the page you want and that you know is out there.”

The other thing that I really like about Cuil, which is very different from Google, is that they don’t collect data about you or your search habits. Therefore, your search history is private.

The word Cuil is Irish for Knowledge.   Cool.

I’ve tried it a few times today and it seems they’ve underestimated their launch hardware requirements:

Maybe you’ll have better luck!

Try it out and leave a comment.  Do we need another search engine?  I think so. It will be interesting to see how close their algorithm is to Google’s….
