So You Want to Become a Billionaire?

This is the first lottery that I have ever heard of which will pay out ONE BILLION dollars.  Actually – it is going to paid out in Euros, which makes the prize even more incredible.

It is a website called billionairio.com

Here’s what that number looks like €1,000,000,000.

Billionairio claims to have better odds than any other lottery, such as the 6/49 and is selling 75 million tickets.

So your odds, therefore, are one in 75 million.

They also state that they are going to give away 1,200 interim prizes.

Billionairio says they will be drawing the big prize on December 27th, 2008. They are licensed by the Lotteries and Gaming Authority of Malta, which according to my research is a credible organization.

Draws are verified publicly, which I like.  The other thing that I like about the business model is that the Jackpot counter on the website shows the current jackpot and estimated odds.

As of this writing, Billionairio.com shows a weak Alexa page rank of about 2,600,000 and doesn’t register on Google.com/trends.

However, if this lottery actually works, those could be good things because less people will visit the site…wait a minute…that doesn’t make sense…they NEED people to visit the site to sell tickets.

This situation presents an interesting marketing conundrum fraught with some ‘almost’ Hollywood movie-like elements: a race against the clock…tons of cash…and a VERY large target to hit.

If you buy a ticket and win, be prepared to become the next famous international lottery winner...the first to win a billion Euro.  You can not take the cash and hide out in the Cayman Islands anonymously:

Section 15.2.3 of their terms and conditions state:

A Player can not claim anonymity or deny co-operation in conjunction with receiving his winnings. Unless any advertising of the promotional activities, BILLIONAIRIO requests the player to participate in, is denied by the Gaming Authority of Malta, refusal to participate will void the Players claim to his prize and the prize draw shall be repeated under exclusion of this Player’s ticket number/s.

What they’ve got going for them right now to keep people coming back are the novelty of the big prize, the interim prizes and that little jackpot counter.

I will be watching closely to see how they fair with the marketing efforts and what the jackpot looks like.

Heck, I may even buy a ticket!

I don’t always take the time to comment (my bad, sorry), but I still find your blog/insights fascinating and often useful. Thanks for continuing to provide this “breath of fresh air” that talks about something other than the latest celeb gossip! (Some of us have brains and we want to use them!)
