Porsche Boxster Paint Polish and Detail

It’s true that I’m a speed freak. I like fast cars.  And yes, I am also a neat freak.  I also like things to look really good and I’m willing to make the investment in time and effort to keep stuff looking it’s best.

Add my love of neatness to my love of fast cars, mix well with my obsessive compulsive personality disorder (I’m not officially diagnosed by the way, but my research on the matter indicates that I likely have OCD :) ).

The conclusion here is that I like my cars to be looking really good while going really fast.  There is a twisted sort of irony in this conversation - I realize this.

Anyway, my neighbor has a beautiful Porsche Boxster that I offered to detail the exterior for him with the Ultimate Detailing Machine.

Why?

  • Because I love detailing nice cars
  • It’s a bit of a hobby for me
  • I have a solid background in how to detail cars
  • It’s a great way to pass some time, listen to music and drink wine
  • I get a great sense of accomplishment from it
  • I love car cleaning products (don’t ask and don’t laugh)

After washing and inspecting the paint on the Boxster, I concluded that most of the car was actually in pretty good shape.  The goal that I set for myself was to be done within about an hour.

I failed miserably.

The project took about 2-3 hours because I wasn’t happy with the results and had to keep working certain sections of the paint to bring them up to my standards.

For this project I used (in the following order):

  1. Meguiars Gold Class Car Wash
  2. Meguiars Professional Fine Cut Cleaner
  3. Meguiars Professional Show Car Glaze
  4. Mequiars Professional Hi-Tech Yellow Wax
  5. Eagle One Was as U Dry (just to clean extra wax build up in some spots).

All of the Meguiars products above were applied with the Ultimate Detailing Machine. All their Professional products should be applied with with a machine polisher.

Everything was done away from the sun and in my garage.

I buy a lot of my stuff online from Autopia Car Care.  I think they are the best in the online car care business.  I have spoken with the owner, David Ostroff,  a number of times personally and he is committed to ensuring the best possible experience for every customer.

They’ve got some great forums and educational content on car care.

Anyway, in the end, the project worked out very well.  I forgot how hard Porsche clear coat is (which what you’re really polishing anyway) which caused me to work a bit harder for a bit longer.  Porsche does everything a little different than everyone else, but in the end, you can’t argue with the finished product.

  1. Nice! I drive a 1990 Ford Tempo - neither fast nor classy, but it runs! It’s in dreadful need of detailing now that fall is here. I love Maguiars’ products, but hate the task of applying them. Thanks for the tips about using the Ultimate Detailing Machine. I shall look for one! (And someone to use it for me.) :)
