La Flor Dominicana Cigar Review

Okay, I admit it…I really like this whole cigar thing. I was gifted a very nice cigar a few years ago by a friend of mine in Los Angeles. I don’t actually remember what it was, but I know that I really enjoyed the experience. I think it might have been a Romeo Y Julietta “Churchill” because of the metal tube that it came in. I’ll never forget the smell of the thin wood wrapper - it was lovely and smelled like cedar.

Lately, I’ve been learning more about the whole subculture and have become quite intrigued with it. The web seems to be such a great medium for sharing information (big surprise there!) and learning for newbies like me. Somehow, I think that cigars work on the same Homer Simpson part of my brain that says “mmm… good”, so I just go with it.

Let’s not kid each other, I am not a cigar expert and I don’t inhale (just like Bill Clinton). Recently I went to my favorite cigar shop here in Kelowna where it was suggested that I try out a LaFlor Dominicana.

It was a bit of a splurge at $21.00 Canadian dollars (they retail for $5.50 US south of the border), but I had busted backside this weekend putting in cedars and wanted to treat myself with something I’m really starting to enjoy.

The exact cigar that I bought is the Double Ligero Chisel 54 X 6. I punched a small hole with a cigar hole punch in the top side of the chisel to provide for a nice draw to hit my palette on the roof of my mouth. This worked wonders for flavour. Not only that, but no one in their right mind would hack the end off of the beautiful chisel this wonderful brand is well known for.

According to the (excellent) La Flor website the product is wrapped in Ecuadorian Sumatra and the rest is all Dominican tobacco. Just reading about the time and attention that goes into this incredible product makes me want to go and get another one…and another one.

If you were going to pick one cigar to try as your first, this would be what I’d have to recommend. Just know that you’ll probably be hooked if you do. If you like rich, aromatic cigars, fine wine, good food or great scotch, you’re gonna love this cigar.
