Here’s a service that I like. Keyword Spy is an online service that you can use to see what key words and ad variations your competition is using to drive traffic to their site and what the most profitable ones are.
Plain and simple, the value proposition for me is that you can take advantage of all the work your competition has done to figure out their marketplace online and then copy it yourself.
Why go through all that work when you don’t have to?
This is exactly the same principle that Wendy’s, A & W and other fast food restaurants apply when looking for good locations. It’s well known that McDonald’s does a very good job of researching locations, foot traffic, automobile traffic and other related demographic trends.
Once McDonald’s picks the location, then the competition just sets up shop as close by as possible and avoids the cost and effort of doing the same research, while capitalizing on it.
Keyword spy allows you a 10 free tests before you have to sign up for a trial. The free trial only shows you the first 10 variations of your search. You have to sign up for the free trial to see them all - which is no big deal.
The first thing you do is type in a keyword or domain. A result set is showing your competitors keywords. Then you can import those keywords into an Excel file and then simply copy and paste them into your own campaign.
The other thing that I really liked with Key Word Spy’s tool is that if you’re an affiliate for a given product or service, you can see what other affiliate competitors are doing with key words for Commission Junction, Amazon, Linkshare, etc., as well.

Great Post! I use this program and it rocks! I have the number one search position for most of my keywords and am in the top 4 on all of them!

I like the you way you explain “elimination of keyword research” using McDonald’s and other fast food chains’ data gathering technique. I also love the Affiliate Keyword feature of KeywordSpy. Cheers!
