Cubana Sweet Nostalgia Cigar Review

This cigar pushes the envelope for the purists I’m sure – but for me, it was worth a try. Here in Kelowna, we are lucky to have a great cigar shop in Minit Market. You can find them with Google Maps if you click here. If you come to visit this incredible part of the world, be sure to stop by and check out their selection. They are fun, friendly and cigar-knowledgeable folks with a central location next to the big mall in our city called Orchard Park.

Anyway, back to this cigar. The reason it was worth a try is because Cubana is a well known cigar maker, whose products are respected by anyone who knows cigars. This cigar is hand rolled with all Nicaraguan wrapper and tobacco. The seeds however, were grown in Cuba.

As it turned out I was having a quick visit with a friend and had two of these cigars with me. So, in exchange for being cameraman, I agreed to provide compensation for my friend with one of the Cubanas. Pretty good deal if you ask me! Anyway, as we were enjoying a cup of half decent green tea, we decided to video a review which is at the end of this post.

I didn’t have a cigar cutter with me, so I chomped the end off old-school style. While doing this, I immediately noticed something very different – a nice, sweet taste on the tobacco. It was almost as sweet as honey. The reason is because the tobacco in this cigar is infused with sugar cane – the main reason I took a flyer on them and bought a couple. Another reason is because it is hand made.

From the first draw, I was impressed. Great aroma, a smooth, even burn and a very novel, yet enjoyable sweetness. I could get used to these. While I can’t stand Captain Blacks, Swisher Sweets or any of those other ‘wannabe’ stogies, this is in fact a real, hand made cigar…with a twist. I think the other reason that I like this cigar is in the the way that its flavour profile has been modified: naturally, not with chemicals such as those used in the wannabe category.

What was interesting to note is how the ember burned into these little crystals that looked like brown sugar.Cubana Sugar Cristals in the Ember I’m guessing this is a side effect of the cane sugar. One downside to this sweetening augmentation is that I noticed the cigar burned a little faster than others of this ring size.

Overall, this was a great cigar experience and I would definitely buy another one. In fact I might even buy five of them just to keep a few around. Especially when you consider that it cost me about $8.00 CDN, this was a solid value.

I rate this cigar an 8 out of 10. I’m rating it high because it scores so well on all the basics AND does a good job of blending in novelty factor of the sugar cane sweetness.

I looks good, it smells good, it is well made, it represents great value and it tastes great.
