Couture for the Kids

This was a great night in so many ways. Especially the fashion show, which we need to do more often in Kelowna…

The fashion show took place on April 26 as a fund raiser and to showcase fashion designer JASON MATLO’s 2008 spring line.

Jason is a Kelowna boy who, while having travelled globally on behalf of his brand, now lives in Vancouver. Also in attendance was actress GABRIELLE MILLER of Corner Gas fame.

I had the chance to meet Gabrielle on the side walk after the show and can say that she was down to earth, with a great sense of humor. Traci and Jason

The whole point of this event was to raise funds for the B.C. Childrens Hospital by selling $75 tickets (I think there were about 300 of them) and some great items at a silent auction before the show. The show was sold out and will likely happen again next year.

The food was ok, but not at the level of the fashion in my humble opinion. The venue (the old Laurel Packing House) was barely large enough and the temperature with the lights and sound equipment (and our desert temperatures) became too much for some.

For others, I’m sure it was fine. I personally like the heat, especially with the winter we just had!

I bid on an awesome Teknion office chair during the silent auction and won it. I was more than pleased to part with some money to support the cause and also my backside since I spent most of my working hours on it staring at a monitor.

Here’s a pic of me sitting on the Teknion during the bidding:

Jason’s designs have been worn by some A-listers who’ve walked the red carpets of the ACADEMY AWARDS, TEEN PEOPLES CHOICE AWARDS, JUNO,GEMINI and LEO AWARDS.

It’s great publicity for him and I’d be pleased as a fellow Canadian and friend of the family if he got more of it.

He’s dressed celebrities Sara Ramerez from Grey’s Anatomy (one of my favorite shows, when I get the chance to watch it…which is lately, like, never), Hilary Duff, Kristanna Loken of “I’ll be back!!!” Terminator 3 fame (hot hot hot), Gabrielle Miller of Corner Gas and Robson Arms and Tanya Kin of E-Talk Daily.

The show was as good as anything you’d likely see in New York or LA.

It was well organized and the music was absolutely awesome – in fact where I was standing taking some pics was the DJ. I asked him about the music and he told me that a lot of it hadn’t even been released yet – he must’ve had some connections in the US.

Killer tunes – I should have been taking notes on that stuff. Damn.Jason Matlo Couture for the Kids

Anyway, the tunes and the sound system couldn’t have been better.

The models were incredible. Beautiful. Pros. Those girls have mad skills.

The event was like being in a posh night club – but full of beautiful models, sweet beats and good champagne…don`t forget the compulsory $75 cover charge ;)

Yes – tickets included a champagne reception from the best sparkling wine you can buy anywhere: Summerhill Cipes Brut (a local Kelowna Winery) was served and although I don’t like champagne that much, Cipes Brut is awesome stuff and I thought it was the perfect choice for the event.

Afterwards, ticket holders were invited to a greatSteak and Spinach Salad local restaurant (Christopher’s here in Kelowna) for a tapas selection. At the reception you could chat with Jason, Gabrielle and the models.

But I was hungry (as usual), so I ordered a 12oz New York steak and Spinach salad while the models were drinking Pellegrino and ice water. At least I didn’t eat any carbs.

I guess it’s tough being a model.

Here is a compilation of all the (good) shots I took in video format:

  1. What a great event…just oozing with style! Fashion really has transcended to a whole other level, global influence can be found in corners of the world we might never expect to find it!
