Carlos Torano Exodus 1959 Gold Label Cigar Review
The first thing that I thought of when I light this cigar up was fresh cut grass. Thick, green, Kentucky Bluegrass… kind of what the lawn trimmings from the White House would smell like if you burned them.
Immediately you won’t notice much aroma with this cigar. On the nose, the wrapper and tobacco have a great caramel like scent. But then when you light it up, you expect a big hit of those same qualities and then just don’t come. For me there was a little bit of edginess in the flavor profile, but nothing major.
The burn is even and straight, which is what I’d expect from a box-pressed product like this.
After a few draws the flavour and robustness (is that even a word?) start to present themselves. Then it gets big and flavorful. It’s the kind of cigar that in the winter time would remind you of being back in the Caribbean or somewhere tropical and humid.
Cigar aficionado rated this a ‘top five’ in 2006 and their blog often describes it as a reference product. It cost me about $18 here in Kelowna and was worth every penny. The tobacconist told me she has a client who smokes three a day. Wow.
If you are going to try your first cigar, I would recommend this one, or my favorite, the La Flor. It’s also a great cigar to buy for someone who knows cigars or for the purpose of celebrating something with the boys.
Torano is a well known, family run business with lots of pedigree and history. They have a great website too. Torano is what Patron is to Tequila or Glenmorangie is to Scotch.
One pronounces the brand phonetically “Toran-yo” (which I failed to do properly in the short video clip that follows - shame on me - flame suit is applied for the corrective posts which I know are coming!).
Here is a short clip one midnight in the driveway of a friends place, enjoying the Exodus:
